Kayaking with George

The other day I had an opportunity to cross one of the things that has been on my bucket list for quite a while.  Whenever I drive by the shoreline I imagine myself out in a kayak enjoying the views from the place that many people get to see it from.

I mentioned to a buddy of mine recently, George Stenberg, that I would love to find someone that can take me out kayaking the first time. That I have been searching for just the right person but hadn’t found the right time or place or person but I feel comfortable with.

George told me he had spent some time as a kayak instructor and he wouldn’t mind taking me out if I wanted to sometime. George has been a huge inspiration on me when it comes to photography and I love the photos that he takes when he’s on the water.

The thought of George being the one to take me out on my first kayaking trip is hard to explain but I Can’t remember the last time I was excited about an opportunity.

We explored the Skokomish River Where the depth of water was safe and the waters are calm. Watching the silver salmon swim by the kayaks and feeling the waves they made as they scored together was a really cool experience.

George and I talked about the land in the history of that area and George pointed out several areas that were unique to the Delta.

We headed out to some water that was a little bit choppy. In a moment that I was honestly a little cocky and not paying attention, a wave knocked me to one side and I overcompensated to the point of tipping my kayak

The water was cold but it wasn’t as cold as I thought it would be. I’m actually pretty afraid of water and for some reason after being on the water for about an hour inside of the kayak I was surprised at how calm I was.

After wrestling with the kayak for around 30 minutes I was able to follow George’s instructions and get myself back into the kayak.

George drop me off on a little landing well he went back upstream to get the truck and come back and get me. In a weird way the best part of the entire experience started after I fell into the water.

I was able to overcome some fears and fight through a little bit of adversity and while I was alone on the shore I was able to focus on and see some parts in the sky and in the water that I probably wouldn’t have normally paid attention to.

Soaking wet with dirt on my shoes George and I ended the night at dose margaritas to enjoy the rest of the football game and they’re amazing tortilla soup.
